Remembering Joan Scherer
October 14, 1943 – March 25, 2025

Joan Scherer, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on October 14, 1943, to William and Sophie Switzer, Joan lived a life full of passion, connection, and adventure - a life that touched so many hearts and left an indelible mark on the world around her.

Joan will be remembered for her extraordinary gift of making every occasion special. Her home was the heart of family gatherings, especially during holidays when her carefully curated decorations transformed ordinary moments into magical memories. No detail was too small for Joan when it came to creating a welcoming space for those she loved.

Joan never met a stranger. She could chat with absolutely anyone - the cashier at the grocery store, the receptionist at the doctor's office, the server at her favorite restaurant. Five minutes with Joan, and somehow you'd find yourself sharing life stories and laughing like old friends.

Her book club friends will tell you that while Joan always read the books, what she really showed up for was the conversation and, let's be honest, the wine. She loved those evenings of lively discussion that often veered far from whatever novel they were supposed to be discussing.

As a successful real estate agent, Joan's work ethic was unmatched. She hustled tirelessly to provide for her children, showing them through example the meaning of dedication and perseverance. Her professional accomplishments were a source of quiet pride.

No one was more fiercely protective than Joan when it came to her family. She was feisty and unwavering in her defense of loved ones, never allowing an unkind word to be spoken about them in her presence.

And talk about shopping skills. Joan could spot a bargain from across the store. Nordstrom Rack was her happy place, and she'd emerge triumphant with finds that had everyone asking, "How did you get that for that price?" Shopping was true retail therapy for Joan.

Joan’s adventurous spirit took her far and wide, but her heart always belonged to her family. She was the devoted wife of Paul, her partner in life’s great journey, and the proud mother of two sons, Scott Behrens of Incline Village, Nevada, and Brett Behrens of Beaverton, Oregon. Her legacy lives on in her six cherished grandchildren - Bryan, Rowan, Miles, Blake, Luke, and Claire - whose lives she filled with love, laughter, and endless stories, and in her sister, Sandra Kuebler, of Las Vegas, NV.

We'll miss you, Joan. Thanks for all the conversations, the perfectly set tables, and for showing us how to live with warmth and spirit.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held Saturday, May 17th on the grounds of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Incline Village from 2-5. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Joan’s memory by taking a moment to connect with someone new, go shopping, or plan a little adventure of your own - because that’s exactly what she would have done.
